With the leaves changing color, the nights growing colder and the smell of pumpkin spice in the air, it’s no wonder my thoughts are quickly turning to … holiday war movies, of course!
Those trailers I watched back in the spring and summer? They’re finally coming to our screens for real. Here are two war movies scheduled for release in late 2017 or very early 2018 that should be on your radar. You’re welcome.
Darkest Hour
What it’s about: Darkest Hour tells the story of how newly-elected British prime minister Winston Churchill changed the course of modern European history by choosing to fight Nazi Germany rather than negotiate a peace treaty. His famous quote, “If you’re going through Hell, keep going” rallied the British people to stand firm against nightly bombings and fight to preserve England’s freedom despite wavering support from government and the monarchy.
Why I want to see it:So many recent WWII movies have looked at events from the standpoint of Allied soldiers in the trenches that I’m looking forward to Darkest Hour as a portrait of the power of leadership and moral resolve.

12 Strong
What it’s about:Subtitled “The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers,” 12 Strong tells the story of the first CIA paramilitary officers and US Special Forces teams deployed to Afghanistan following 9/11.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon and is based on the book Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by award-winning journalist Doug Stanton.
Why I want to see it: Two words: Jerry Bruckheimer. Oh, and beyond that, I can’t wait to see an old-school rifles and horses war movie set in an arena that has become more commonly associated with IEDs, missiles and drone warfare.
What’s more, book author Stanton co-wrote the screenplay, so the action is bound to be authentic. And the biggest bonus of all: The actors were trained by Harry Humphries, the former Navy SEAL whose technical expertise made Black Hawk Down one of the most authentically awesome war movies of all time.
